It’s that time of year again where you can’t help but notice that the scorching desert temperatures are now accompanied by a thick hit of humidity. Emerging from your air-conditioned house into the outside heat, sunglasses instantly steam up, your meticulously applied make-up is now at risk — and don’t even get us started on our humidity hair. Breakouts are appearing more frequently, an increase in oil production is clogging pores, leaving your skin feeling abnormally greasy. Sound all too familiar? Well, when it's humid, your skin loses less water, staying hydrated for longer which is normally a good thing, however, you also sweat more and when the air is humid perspiration and natural skin oils can’t evaporate as easily, so they collect on the skin’s surface, and in return play havoc with your complexion. Plus, at the moment we need to be aware that the damp hot weather whilst wearing a face mask is a breeding ground for bacteria. So, if like us you’re staying put this summer, it’s time to take extra care in keeping your skin as cool and clean as possible. Fear not, help is at hand in the form of hardworking beauty products making your Arabian sticky summer bearable.

CLEANSERS

Unless you have extremely dry skin, switch to a gel or foaming cleanser, it will do a better job of soaking up oil than your usual heavy cream-based formula. For those with extra oily skin, try a clay-based cleanser for extra absorption.

EXFOLIATOR

Step up your exfoliating game if you’re noticing that your skin is extra greasy, but do this gradually. If you usually use a mild exfoliator once a week, try using it twice a week instead. Oilier skin can tolerate more exfoliation to help remove excess debris and unclog pores.

MASKS

Whether you’re into sheet masks, leave-on treatments or rinse-off remedies, a top tip is to keep them in the fridge. Nothing will de-puff a long day in front of your computer complexion, calm and refresh tired eyes, or cool down sun-hit skin like a layer of chilled skincare.

TONER

After cleansing, make sure you use a toner to replenish lost moisture and prepare your skin for maximum absorption of serums and moisturisers. Use one with witch hazel or green tea to help tighten up those pores for a smoother complexion. And if your skin is looking like an oil slick come lunchtime, treat it to a refreshing spritz with a soothing, hydrating toner to awaken your skin with some shine control.

SERUM

Serums are the powerhouse of any skincare routine, but during the humid summer months, it is recommended to swap out your heavier products for lighter formulas that feel cool on the skin. Opt for a water-based serum after any liquid essence treatments and before lotions and creams for a refreshed and smooth complexion.

MOISTURISER

You may think that moisturising will make your skin look greasier but even oily skin needs to keep hydrated. High humidity calls for ditching the occlusive creams and milky lotions, switching them out for something much lighter like water or gel-based ingredients. Lightweight creams provide much-needed hydration without stirring-up excess sebum.

SUNSCREEN

Ironically, when it’s hot and sticky outside its tempting to ditch the most important step in your regime: sunscreen. Look for the ultra-hydrating, easy-to-absorb and smooth non-oily textures with a high SPF to keep your face protected all day long without looking ashy-white.

MAKE-UP

Avoid using primers, thick make-up and setting sprays to help keep pores breathing all day. Instead of a full coverage foundation, opt for a lighter tinted moisturiser — bonus if it has an SPF. Need more coverage? Use a brush to pat a dry texture concealer where you have redness, like under your eyes and nose.
